00:01Music playing.

01:39Alright. That was a fun video, huh?

01:44Dev Dude, been around the world, coding everywhere, but he made it back here to Palm Springs like all of you.

01:51You know, I don't know what you believe, but I believe any time you can take Johnny Cash, bring him closer to GIS...

01:58...good things are bound to happen.

02:01And that's what this week's about.

02:03This week is about good things happening for all of us together.

02:07And, we're excited that you're here. This is a lot of people.

02:12This is awesome.

02:13And I want to bring out Jack Dangermond to help welcome you or welcome you and invite you to the DevSummit this year. Jack.

02:21Hello. Hello, Jim. Hello, everybody. Great. Yeah.

02:29What do you think? Pretty good, yeah.

02:31Lot of people. Lot of people.

02:32Are you scared?

02:33I'm shaking.

02:34You should be scared.

02:35Well, whenever you're around me, I get weirded out.

02:37Oh, yeah, well, come on.

02:39You're not going to stand over here.

02:41Welcome everybody. Thank you for coming, by the way.

02:44I know it takes a lot to get here, but it's good, and the plans and what they're going to do here today are just awesome.

02:50So thank you. We like people to meet each other when they're here, because we have a lot to share...

02:57...but you guys have a lot to share among each other.

02:59We got all week for this. Got stuff to do this morning.

03:03Got stuff to do this morning?

03:04Important stuff. Important business.

03:05Important stuff. It's very important. Look, I want you to do that for the next couple of days.

03:13Do it again and again. Anytime you get a chance, meet somebody new.

03:16Because like I say, we have a lot to share here, but you guys also have huge knowledge to share and...

03:23...get to know each other, what you're doing, how you're doing it.

03:26Developers are important. You're important to make GIS really work.

03:30It's my only message really today.

03:33The technology that you're about to see is sometimes going to be overwhelming.

03:38There's so much of it that's coming, and I suppose I always have that in my belief system...

03:43...that technology's going to answer the problems of the world.

03:47I mean, there's a lot of problems out there.

03:49I mean, we've got...it's almost enormously overwhelming when you read the papers and you think about it.

03:56But, on the other hand, the bright light is what you guys are doing...

04:01...what we're doing collaboratively to be a counter force to those issues, issues of climate change and population growth...

04:08...and land-use planning and building livable cities and all those things.

04:12These guys handle it well.

04:13These guys handle it well, exactly.

04:15It's other people.

04:16Well, that's the whole point is, we have to believe as humans that we can make a difference...

04:22...and you, particularly, the developer community taking, working, innovating our tools, and making a difference is...

04:30...extraordinarily important.

04:33In my entire career, and I've been at this a long time, I have never had a year like this year.

04:39What you're about to see is breathtaking stuff, and it's all rolling out in the next few months, Jim, or weeks.

04:49Jim is in charge of the release cycle, and he's a pretty good guy, but he and I always have this little conflict.

04:58When is it coming, Jim?

05:00So you're going to tell us. When we're done with it, Jack. I see, okay.

05:02There you go. Anyway, have a wonderful time, guys, and I'll be looking around, seeing you...

05:08...and meeting some of you during the week. Good. See you.

05:12Thanks for stopping by.

05:19I was walking around out here this morning, and it was good to see so many friendly faces...

05:24...and meet up with some folks I haven't seen for a while.

05:27I do want to publicly apologize to Jeff who I kicked out of here at 7:30.

05:31You know, I know there's overachievers, but you got your good seat, Jeff, so I told you it would happen.

05:36Alright. Let's get into it.

05:38What are we going to do this morning?

05:39The agenda...I'll do a little bit of housekeeping stuff, overview of the conference itself.

05:44We'll get an update of where we are with the software releases.

05:48Then we'll talk about ArcGIS 10.1, both Server and Desktop, and some other areas...

05:53...and also ArcGIS Online. Very exciting stuff for us and you.

05:58Then we'll go into a break, and then we'll come back and we'll talk about native app development, and then we'll break for lunch.

06:04If we have official announcements for you this week, we're going to use at DevSummit for Twitter but if, you know...

06:12...the chatter and what we'll be listening on is #DevSummit.

06:15We got a pretty good wireless system in here, you know, but be a good neighbor and, you know...

06:21...don't be watching YouTube videos and stuff so everybody can get on the wireless and use it.

06:26As an important note, if, for whatever reason we need to leave this room, there's a lot of us.

06:31If there's an emergency, there's emergency exits clearly marked on the sides over here. Get up and get out.

06:39If you're just really kind of, look, we're developers.

06:43We going to do good stuff for you.

06:44It's going to be real and a little raw.

06:48Even if it's just not working for you and you've got to leave, don't use the emergency exits.

06:51Just use the normal doors back there, and you can go out that way.

06:56So, really, this conference has always been, you know, our theme is for developers by developers.

07:03And we've stayed the course basically for the, you know, the last few years of sharing best practices and development patterns...

07:12...learning about new technologies, solving problems, talking about new ideas, collecting your feedback...

07:19...and strengthening and building relationships, and that's what this week is all about, you know, one-on-one time...

07:24...you know, building community.

07:26This is...we have over 1,700 attendees plus our partners. Thank you very much for spending your time with us this week.

07:34To interact with you, we have over 300 development staff here this week.

07:38Jack pretty much let us move out here, and we've got 30 development teams represented in tech sessions, in the showcase...

07:47...and meet the teams tonight throughout the entire week.

07:51Thirty percent of you came here from international destinations. Thank you very, very much.

07:57And 60 percent of you work for commercial and private businesses.

08:00You know, what are you coding in? A lot of .NET developers, web developers, mobile developers, Python developers...

08:07...Java developers as well.

08:09And this is the largest DevSummit ever.

08:12So this is awesome.

08:14I want to say thank you to our sponsors, a platinum sponsor of SitePen, gold sponsors with APOS, Microsoft, and vmware...

08:22...thank you very much for assisting us there with the conference.

08:27And we've got a big week planned.

08:29There's a lot of stuff going on. I'm not going to go through it. It's all in the agenda.

08:33But yesterday, the presummit sessions, this is really a four-day conference.

08:38You said you wanted full content, four days, and we've done that.

08:41We had 16 preconference seminars yesterday.

08:45Did any of you guys take advantage of those things?

08:47Who went to those things? Good. Lots of hands.

08:50Last year we had four. This year we had 16. So huge growth there.

08:55And also hands-on training for JavaScript, Python, Dojo.

09:00And in the showcase, it's bigger. We have more people.

09:04We have all the software products represented there and technical support there as well...

09:09...and it's open throughout the day. Go in and get your questions answered.

09:13Also in that...in the showcase area is two very large demo theaters.

09:17We've dramatically increased the size of the theaters themselves.

09:21And also there are 42 demo theater sessions up from 34 last year.

09:28So that was...that's huge.

09:30Yesterday, Speed Geeking. Didn't really know how this went, but it went really well. About 160 people showed up.

09:37Bronwyn was the minister of ceremonies, and I hear she had a rubber chicken...

09:41...and she moved people along with 20 topics and presentations.

09:45We put that one really close to the hotel bar, so if it didn't go so well, you didn't have to walk very far to get a drink.

09:51But it went well. We'll do that again.

09:55Also the GIS Expo last night was awesome.

09:57There were so many people there, and it was great to catch up.

10:00Actually have the overlap of our Business Partner Conference and the Dev Summit and see some great work...

10:06...that our sponsors and others are doing.

10:09So today, this morning, we're going to be in the plenary, and then we're going to go right in the heart of the DevSummit...

10:14...which is our technical sessions.

10:15We put a huge amount of work into these sessions for you.

10:18We have 72 unique technical sessions this year, up from 63 last year, you know, 28 percent more sessions.

10:26And we also realize that because so many people came to the conference this year, you know, a session might be full.

10:34But we want to be very agile about this. We'll be repeating 16 to 18 sessions on Thursday...

10:39...and if you can't get into a session, let us know.

10:42So e-mail us at DevSummit@esri.com or use the #DevSummit hashtag.

10:48We'll be listening and we'll do what we can to actually repeat a session that is filled to capacity.

10:54Also user presentations...awesome.

10:57These are presentations that you are giving and that you vote on.

11:01And there's 36 of them this year, up from 30 last year, so 20 percent more user presentations.

11:07And also tonight is Meet the Teams around the pool.

11:11Come and meet us. Have a drink. Socialize, and, you know, talk shop.

11:15And also Lightning Talks today as well, this evening.

11:21Wednesday, we have a great keynote speaker, Steve Riley, and he'll be talking about the cloud.

11:30And, again, right after the keynote, more tech sessions.

11:34Wednesday night, party. Good food. Good drinks. Games. Lots of fun.

11:39And, of course, the world-famous dodgeball tournament...live by the ball, die by the ball.

11:45Is this guy who's laying on the ground here, I think he was from Brazil, you here?

11:49Yell something. Oh, he's not here. Well, I wouldn't want him on my team anyway, so that's fine. That's alright.

11:55This is huge. You know, you win this and you get free tickets...free tickets for Dev Summit next year. So this is good.

12:04Thursday. Do not leave early.

12:07Most people do not, but we have more tech sessions on Thursdays.

12:11We have a closing session here, and Scott Morehouse, the director of software development will be presenting in the closing session...

12:18...bookending the conference.

12:19Also Jim Barry will be talking about the community.

12:22Lots of you have interaction with Jim Barry, you know, through his DevMeetups and whatnot.

12:26A panel discussion will be taking questions from you as well.
