00:01We've also looked at ways of maintaining your spatial data and some of those processes.

00:06And a lot of it, looks at some of the workflows and some of the procedures that you're doing.

00:11Let's take a look at some of those now.

00:17We're reviewing three at this juncture.

00:20And it's about template based.

00:22Those template-based editing tools that you saw earlier in some of the demonstrations about some of the symbols...

00:29...and being able to edit and take advantage of those features right there...

00:33...allow you to scale different types of editing solutions from the desktop to the Web and mobile.

00:41All of those are available for you to use now.

00:44And then you can also customize, and I think we'll be seeing one of those template-based editing solutions in the next demonstration...

00:50...as well as how to add in a new symbol or feature to that.

00:56There's a few here that may be in local government. Any of you guys do parcel management?

01:00Anybody in this room? See a few hands...that's good.

01:05So what we did was we've been working with you all and trying to understand some of the workflow that you've been doing.

01:12You've got that parcel fabric. And the traditional way of doing things has been oftentimes to create a set of custom tools.

01:20Build all those together and then make those available.

01:23Well, we've taken a look at that and integrated, along with the parcel fabric...

01:28...a new toolbar and editing, set of toolbars for you to use.

01:32Those combine the traditional COGO editing functionality that you're used to using...

01:39...with the high-precision Cadastral Editor tools that were previously only available with the [ArcGIS] Survey Analyst.

01:47So you have that, those tools combined in one location, enabled for you to start and leverage those to do...

01:54...and be more effective with the ways that you're editing and maintaining those parcel fabrics.

02:00The third area that we've looked at, and this is becoming more part of the system or part of your, how do you do work...

02:06...is about looking at a couple extensions.

02:08There's the [ArcGIS] Data Reviewer and also looking at workflow management and how do you do that.

02:15So there's many organizations that rely upon data coming into their agency or department.

02:22And they've set standards on the types of information that they need.

02:26It needs to be high quality and it has to follow the rules that they're establishing before they can do anything.

02:32Well, a lot of times, that process has fallen by the wayside, leaving someone that's doing...

02:39...edits and doing some analysis, they have to go back and do some cleanup on that content coming in.

02:45The [ArcGIS] Data Reviewer is a tool that you can use for quality control, quality assurance of information coming in or going out...

02:53...based upon the standards that you're establishing, minimizing those errors coming in before you do any work.

03:01The second area is about looking at the workflow and workflow management.

03:05Think about an organization in California that's assembling framework data to be distributed out to the state.

03:13They have many different district or local offices, and they all are contributing information into the system.

03:21They have common functions or editing processes that the manager would like them to maintain.

03:29[ArcGIS] Workflow Manager allows you to gather and assemble those processes and distribute out those tools...

03:36...to the community to begin that process and follow it in an established framework to achieve high accuracy and results.

03:45It also allows the manager to begin to understand where things are within the organization...

03:50...on the workflow process that they've established.

03:53So think about it, if you have an application that relies upon different sets of people to do different...

04:00...different pieces of the edit process, common functions need to be distributed out, this is the place to do that.

04:07And as you're building your enterprise applications, this is more and more of a vital resource.

04:16We've also taken a look at the geodatabase improvements.

04:22We've taken a look at the new topology and new topology rules.

04:26So a topology rule is something like eliminating all slivers as I'm building my geodatabase in the process.

04:33It's, that's one of those types of rules.

04:35We've provided six additional rules to increase the quality of information going into your system.

04:42The second area, and this is actually one of my favorites, and I think, my...

04:47...clients and colleagues appreciate this one a lot, is about the attachments.

04:53The attachment...it's like a PDF or an image that you have.

04:57Prior to this release, you've had to do like a hyperlink to the feature in the geodatabase that you've been maintaining.

05:04Another thing that was done automatically is all the dimensions have been calculated for me.

05:05Kind of hard, and in order for people to start searching and looking for all the information about the...

05:11...the documents that you have associated with that feature.

05:13At 10 release, this is now attachments are part of the features that you maintain in the geodatabase.

05:19So you can add those in.

05:21So think about a project that you have about a wetland delineation project.

05:27And you need to look at all the historical information that was gathered in that area.

05:32All those documents can be processed and viewed...

05:37...within the feature system that you have in the geodatabase.

05:40One place to look at in the map and discover all that information.

05:45Think you can take advantage of that off the bat as well.

05:49Additionally, we're coming up with the open API later in the year...

05:54...which allows developers to see simple features in the file geodatabase.

06:00So they don't need a seat of ArcGIS to see that valuable data that you're maintaining.

06:06They can take that information and begin to incorporate that in another report or another system.

06:12It's open, interoperable, and I think that's going to place value on the information that you're maintaining in the geodatabase.

06:21We'll now go into our second demonstration on editing improvement, or first demonstration on editing, excuse me.

06:27Katja?

06:28Alright. So let's take a look at editing improvements in ArcGIS 10.

06:32And this is actually one of my favorite enhancements.

06:35And, how many of you have started doing editing in ArcGIS 10, by the show of hands?

06:42Okay, just a few of you.

06:45Those of you that have started editing will find out quickly enough that it is quite different from 9.3 and earlier releases.

06:55It is different, but once you get used to the new way of editing, it's really a lot more intuitive, faster, and...

07:05...there's really no way of going back.

07:06So let's take a look at Editor.

07:10So editing is done using templates, and we have seen a template in Jenn’s presentation earlier in the day.

07:21And what templates do for you is allow you to set the attributes, the symbol, and the default tool that gets picked...

07:31...for a specific type of feature.

07:33So here, I have the utility network that I'm going to be editing.

07:40And I've got a number of different feature classes on which I have created templates.

07:46So let's go ahead and do the sewer main extension, so I'm going to create a manhole.

07:54So I pick the manhole template, create a couple of those, and then I'm connecting them using the 10-inch PVC main.

08:04So I'll do that. Notice that snapping is enabled by default.

08:11Now, a couple of other things that I want to do is I want to...

08:14...create the lateral lines from the gravity main to the parcel.

08:19And notice that I got this Feature Construction toolbar.

08:23And the toolbar has the tools that are typically used in the kind of editing that I'm doing, but it's in the way.

08:29So if I hit the Tab key, it gets out of the way, and I can continue doing editing and I can use the Feature Construction toolbar.

08:38So let's go ahead and create another lateral here.

08:42And, in this case, I'm editing a geometric network.

08:47Anybody in here working with utility networks?

08:52Okay, a few of you.

08:53So the geometric networks, or utility networks, have rules that are set up about them that create features for you automatically...

09:02...based on the rules.

09:03So in this case, when I'm creating a lateral, there is a fitting that has been added automatically.

09:08And there is a lateral point, or a meter, that has been created at the end of the line automatically for you.

09:16So all of that is still there, but what I was able to do is create features within different feature classes...

09:25...by just simply clicking on different feature templates that exist and placing those features on the map.

09:35So now, what I want to do is, I want to add an 8-inch PVC extension just to the north of this area.

09:43And if you notice, there is no 8-inch PVC template that has been created yet.

09:50That is certainly a valid type of feature within my geodatabase, so I've got a domain set that has 8-inch PVC as part of it.

09:59In fact, you can see the feature right here.

10:01So another one of my favorite enhancements is actually the ability to create new templates very easily.

10:08So I'll click on one of the templates, and I'll copy it.

10:11And now I can go to the properties of the template and just change the name of it.

10:20You can see the default tool that gets picked when I'm creating that feature.

10:25And I'll change the diameter to 8.

10:28And here are the values that are available within my domain that has been set up, that I have access to.

10:34So now, this template is done; I can just go ahead and create this feature.

10:41And again, get rid of my Feature Construction toolbar that popped up.

10:47So another thing that Tony mentioned is the ability to store attachments within your geodatabase.

10:56So one of the features I have previously created actually has attachments.

11:01So I'm looking in the attributes of the selected feature.

11:05And right here I have a drop-down list to see the attachments that have been uploaded.

11:10In this case, I am playing the video that has been collected inside the pipe.

11:15And it is stored inside the geodatabase but I display it using the default player...

11:21...that has been set up on my computer to play those kind of files.

11:26Another type of feature I have, or type of attachment that I have is actually a CAD document...

11:31...that shows the design for that particular area.

11:35So with attribute attachments, you store the data in a geodatabase...

11:41...but it is opened on your computer or your user's computer...

11:46...using whatever default player for that specific type of file is.

11:50This is similar to hyperlinks, but you don't have to manage the database separately and make sure the links remain correct.

11:59It is all stored within the geodatabase, and that is a very popular attachment...oh...a very popular improvement that we have.

12:06Now, one more feature I want to show you is the Data Reviewer extension that Tony mentioned.

12:13Here I have a geodatabase, and I have the domains and subtypes and geometric network that is set.

12:21But there are often situations where I need to create custom rules for QA/QC, quality assurance.

12:30So you can do that using the [ArcGIS] Data Reviewer extension.

12:33So I've got it enabled in here, and now I have access to the [ArcGIS] Data Reviewer toolbar.

12:41And within here, I can upload the batch job with the rules that I want to run against my database.

12:49And in this case, I'm going to run this against the full database, so I'll check all the features.

12:56I'm running this through a wizard in this demonstration...

12:59...but you can also use geoprocessing to schedule it to run at a specific time.

13:05So in this case, we've got 11 records written to the Reviewer table...

13:10...so here's that Reviewer table, and there are two main types of errors that I've got.

13:16There is empty attribute values that are errors, and then there is the valve diameter that doesn't match.

13:22I can zoom to the geometry of the feature that has a problem; it is displayed in red.

13:28So in this case, you can see I have the 20-inch main and a 12-inch valve on it.

13:34And I can go ahead and make those changes, and in that case, I am sure that the data that I have just created...

13:42...meets the business needs of the organization, okay?

13:46So quite a few editing im…improvements in ArcGIS 10.

13:52All editing is template based.

13:54You have the a…ability to also do parcel editing, so let's take a look at that also.

14:02So let me go back to my previous view, and within here, I want to go ahead and split this parcel.

14:13So there's a Parcel Editor toolbar right now.

14:16I'm still inside my edit session, and as Tony mentioned, you can edit the parcel fabric now within the ArcMap edit session.

14:22And then I'll go in increments of 1.

14:25So it's not a separate extension, it's not a separate fabric; you are within ArcMap edit session.

14:31One thing that that does for you, for instance, you can do undo and redo, which was kind of difficult to do before.

14:36So let's go ahead and select this parcel.

14:39And what I want to do is I want to split it into five lots.

14:45So I'll use the proportional area to split it, and one thing that I want to do here is I want to activate the Parcel Namer tool.

14:54And what that will do is actually give me a choice of where to begin and what the increment to...

15:03...to create the attributes for my parcels with.

15:07So you'll notice that I have parcels labeled 29, 30, and then zeroes.

15:12So all of these years, I want to edit, I want to change the sequence of naming.

15:18So I'll start with number 31, because that's the next one.

15:25So here, using the new Parcel Editor, I was able to make a number of these improvements quickly.

15:40So another major improvement for those of you in the room...I saw quite a few hands that are doing parcel editing.

15:47I think you will find this improvement very valuable. Tony?

15:52Okay, so what I enjoyed seeing is actually the template pieces, because that helps you get started...

15:58...and then be able to copy a template and add in things that I want to add in to this, but it's a great place to start.

16:05As well as the Data, the [ArcGIS] Data Reviewer.

16:09I see that as a valuable asset to improving your workflow and being, making you more productive...

16:15...by establishing rules and standards of that information that you're doing work on.
