00:01Hello everybody. Good to be here.

00:03I'm going to talk about one step back from what Bernie just showed us.

00:06We're going to take you back to the desktop, the ArcMap.

00:09Who here has never used GIS before?

00:13Everyone's used GIS, some people have not.

00:14Okay, good.

00:15Well, very simple, right?

00:16Points, lines, and polygons.

00:18The reason we have a GIS, a powerful tool here, is 'cause we attach attributes.

00:23This all gets stored in the database.

00:25Now we create these templates that Bernie was talking about.

00:28And the templates that I'm going to use in this example are going to show us how we can sort of...

00:32...reconnect Redlands to the Metrolink that connects the rest of Los Angeles and the rest of the area.

00:37And we're going to do this using some of the geodesign tools that I've been fortunate enough...

00:41...to work on for the last little while.

00:43And we're going to do some sketching, and we're going to do some on-the-fly analysis...

00:47...on-the-fly charting and summarizing of attributes, and so on.

00:51And remember these concepts, right, so we can symbolize our data based on attributes.

00:55We used to make a map, now we can kind of create the symbols and then make the map as we go.

01:00So let's go into ArcMap here real quick.

01:02We all know about ArcMap.

01:03This is the world topographic map, that community basemap that we just talked about.

01:08This is for the Redlands area.

01:10And this is where we are - right about here.

01:13We can see that.

01:14Way over here is the closest Metrolink station, this is way over in San Bernardino.

01:17So this is the problem with Redlands right now.

01:19How do we get over there without having to drive, or whatever it is.

01:23We want to reconnect it.

01:25Why we have really the geodesign tools with ArcGIS 10 is what we call editing.

01:32When I start editing in ArcMap, I get these templates.

01:35So whatever I create in my map for my symbols, I now have a template that I can literally pick a symbol...

01:41...and start to draw with it.

01:42I have all these tools down here that ask me, how do I want to draw that?

01:46And I'm going to use this nice pen tablet display here.

01:49Just easier for me to draw.

01:51This is a Wacom unit there outside here.

01:54I'm just going to go ahead and say, well, we know that this rail line is going to come down the existing rail line.

02:00I'm just going to draw this in very roughly to about there.

02:04And then I just created data in the database...

02:07...with a symbol that I can analyze, right?

02:10But I'm going to get in a little bit closer here, just to see what the situation is in Redlands.

02:15And as Bernie said earlier, as I zoom in I get a little bit more detail, and this helps guide how...

02:20...I'm going to do the rest of my design.

02:22Let's take my symbol one more time.

02:23Let's just draw in some straight lines here, and I'm going to continue to sketch this in all the way down...

02:28...to the university, and there's the rest of my proposed light rail line.

02:33Now we've got to add stations.

02:34And there's a plan for four stations in the Redlands area, one at the university, there's one downtown...

02:40...where the current train station is, there's one near Esri, and one near the great big shopping complex out there.

02:48So how do I connect that, then, to my analysis?

02:52I'm mostly concerned with how close these things are to where people live.

02:56And so one big thing for me is walkability.

02:58Walkability is a difficult thing to define, so I've just defined it as, well, can I visualize quarter mile...

03:04...half mile, one mile, and outside of that.

03:07And to do that, what I'm going to do is first sketch my features and then I'm going to analyze them.

03:13So I've got my light rail stops in a database, I've got roads in a database, I'm going to tie those two together...

03:19...with a geoprocessing tool, I'm going to run that, and visualize my walkability, okay?

03:25So again, in geodesign we use these tools to sketch, analyze, visualize, go back and make changes...

03:31...to our design, if I like it, I can keep going, design something else.

03:37So let's just press the little button here. I'm just going to launch a geoprocessing tool from the toolbar...

03:42...which is another great thing with ArcGIS 10.

03:45This is going to do some, a little bit of raster analysis in the background and dump it right out to...

03:51...vector one more time, if it refreshes, and there we go.

03:55So what I did was, it just took a look at that data, ran it against the streets, and just shows me...

04:00...what is dark green - a quarter mile, lighter green - a half mile, lightest green - one mile.

04:05How long does it take to walk?

04:07Well, I guess that's up to everybody else, but at least I have a perception now of, well, I live within...

04:11...a half-mile of the Metrolink station; that's important to me.

04:15All right, our next task then.

04:17We've got to pick a place to do some redevelopment.

04:18Now, this is where I like to get kind of hilarious here.

04:22So, let's zoom in on the old downtown.

04:25Now, there's kind of a problem with Redlands right now is that, much like a lot of towns in the US...

04:29...there's a big abandoned mall in the middle of the city, and it kind of, when they put it in, it ruined the connectivity...

04:35...between what is the existing downtown and what was the old downtown.

04:40Here, over here, we have Esri, and there's our nice basemap for the campus, right?

04:44So, what can we do with this?

04:45Well, here's our Metrolink station, so this seems like a good place to do some redevelopment.

04:49Why don't we just do that?

04:51And so I'm going to start editing one more time.

04:52When I zoom in, I have control over which templates appear at which scale.

04:57And this is my sort of my land-use allocation template that I'm going to use.

05:01And we're going to talk about what's in these templates in a moment.

05:04But the first thing I want to do is actually grab this polygon here.

05:08And I think I have it unselectable right now, so let's go into my layer controls here and I just want to save.

05:15For my current zoning, let me grab this. Let me bring it into my potential project area.

05:21Right away I can see that I've got 11 acres I need to redesign.

05:24That's kind of nice.

05:26What do I do from there?

05:27Let's go in and reconnect, first of all.

05:30Let's grab my pedestrian-only street that I want to put in, and let's run it right across.

05:36I'm not much of a fan of cars, so that's a good start for me.

05:41Do I bring this into a public meeting and say, does everyone agree with this?

05:43Maybe.

05:44These are kind of the public participatory planning tools, just to get a sense of what's going on here.

05:50Let's grab some commercial land use here, and I'm just going to sketch this in.

05:54Maybe this side of my whole development's going to be commercial.

05:57I want to talk briefly about what I just did.

06:00So, I drew a square, I see the area, but we also have this concept of a template here.

06:05We did our walkability so we can go through this one more time, so that's fine.

06:10And let's talk about what I just drew.

06:12I just used some commercial for my template.

06:13A polygon, one acre.

06:15It could be commercial, it could be mixed use. Are we going to see all the other templates in there as well?

06:20I can set default attributes for anything that I draw into the database.

06:25And then in this case, I want default attributes to store information about these various environmental indicators.

06:32We have a list that we've come up with that we're going to analyze on the fly when we do this land-use design.

06:38And I'm going to say, for very acre that I draw, this is how much of each indicator is within one acre.

06:45So whenever I draw something, I'm going to actually have these values summarized for me...

06:50...every time I draw a feature.

06:52So let's go back into ArcMap real quick, and let's just see what happens if I put in mixed use...

06:58...and I'm going to actually bring up a chart here.

07:01You've probably seen this last year, but the big thing for me this year is that we can summarize...

07:05...all these attributes on the fly.

07:07So I'm going to take that same layer that I'm drawing into.

07:09Here it is here.

07:10I'm going to grab it and I bring it in once, and I'm going to bring it in twice, and I'll bring it in three times...

07:17...because I'm going to summarize three different attributes on the fly.

07:21So I'm going to have - let's see here - impervious coverage.

07:26How much of my surface is not impervious to rain?

07:29I'm going to have...what else do we have here?

07:32Total jobs created.

07:33And I'm also going to have vehicle miles traveled per person.

07:37Well, nothing in commercial right now.

07:39So why don't I put in some mixed use here.

07:41I'm going to pan over a little bit.

07:43And, let's see what we can do.

07:45Let's sketch this in.

07:50As I release this, the charts all update automatically.

07:55So what it's done is, it's taken all those default attributes, multiplied it against the area...

08:00...and given me a total for each of those parcels that I just added.

08:04That's pretty good.

08:05And I can go in here, remember all these tools are freehand drawing tools and so on, and as I add other polygons...

08:11...those factors get updated as well.

08:13So that's a big thing for me; that's a nice addition to our geodesign tools.

08:18And, what else?

08:19Let's close this for now.

08:20Let's keep going with our design here.

08:22Let's keep in mind that the basemap gives us a nice view of what's going on in Redlands.

08:26I've got the Redlands current zoning in here, so I can see what kind of fits.

08:30I've got some parks over here.

08:32Let's bring in this pedestrian-only street, and let's run one right into this area.

08:37And let's run another right into this area, okay.

08:42So there we go.

08:43Now, I want to cut this one up a little bit.

08:45I'm going to turn off my selectable layer here.

08:51And I'm just going to cut this in half, because what I want to do is convert that mixed use to park.

08:58So I just chopped this mixed use in half.

09:01I'm going to take this one, open up the attributes, and actually change it to Park, okay?

09:08Now we're dealing with a park, and that's kind of my design in this area.

09:11So I think that's...that suits me pretty well right now, pedestrian-only walkway as we keep the vistas open...

09:18...we've got some new things to work with.

09:20Probably cut this commercial in half, too, since we've got this new walkway going through there.

09:27So that's good.

09:28Now, let's do something else kind of fun with ArcMap.

09:31Let's take this land-use thing that we've just designed, and let's bring it all into another map that I've created...

09:36...where I'm going to do some drawing to - if I can drag this and drop it in - let's just copy this, and let's paste it.

09:46And let's go into this data frame.

09:49This one, it's going to be to scale.

09:52I'm going to draw to scale in ArcMap, and this is a lot of fun because I'm going to start to do things like...

09:56...put in some building footprints just to visualize within my new design, then I'm also going...

10:01...to do some park design like Bernie did.

10:03And let's go in and say, well, within my, for my buildings, first of all, let's just go ahead and put in...

10:11...maybe what a building would look like in this area.

10:17And you'll notice that the symbols that I'm drawing with look a lot like the symbols from the topo map over here.

10:22So we're going to use the same kind of representations, cartographic representations that were used in the basemap.

10:24The basemap's very powerful because we can use all the cartographic tools of ArcMap and push it out over the web.

10:34Let's keep going here; I'll draw only maybe one or two more.

10:37And then that'll be that. Where is it, here? There we go. Come on. There we go.

10:48However you want it to look, right?

10:50This is only my design, could be many designs.

10:53Erik mentioned the term "collaboration."

10:57Is that how I want it to look? Maybe.

10:58Let's do one more thing over here.

11:00'Cause I think we're getting the idea.

11:02I'm going to zoom in just into this park area.

11:04And I'm going to just quickly design a little park here.

11:07And it's going to be based around a little pond.

11:09And I'm just going to throw a pond right in the middle.

11:11There it is.

11:12And I'm going to put in some sidewalks, maybe, around the outside.

11:24So you notice how all the symbols are staying relatively the same size, and that's nice for me.

11:28Because when I start to do things like put trees on the map, I can see exactly how wide they are...

11:35...because I know when an oak is mature, it's 20 feet wide, or when a maple's mature...

11:39...it's 30 feet wide, and so forth.

11:41And, let's do a little bit more here.

11:44Do a little bit more and just start to put in things like a little flower bed, and I'm just going to sketch this out.

11:50This is where the pen comes in handy, right?

11:52Put another little, oops. I'll get rid of that.

11:57And what else?

11:58Here's my, I like these little park benches.

12:01And because they're using representations, I can kind of orient these however I want.

12:05Drop in another one over here.

12:08And rotate.

12:10And...water fountain.

12:13You can see, you can be kind of creative with this stuff, right?

12:16So, that's the last bit of tools for us.

12:20And we're going to take another look at this from a planning perspective.

12:23This is sort of the tools side of it.

12:25But later on at one-thirty this afternoon in the back room, Ahmed and I are going to take this apart in a little more detail...

12:30...with Dr. Klosterman as well, so I encourage you to come over there, let us know what you think.

12:34And again, ArcGIS 10. Editing. Cartographic representations.

12:37We've got geoprocessing, we've got dynamic attribute calculations, dynamic charting.
