00:01So good afternoon, everyone. Welcome to the session on logistics.
00:05I'm Rich Pearlman. I'm the product manager for our logistics group.
00:09And with me is Jeff Rogers who is the program manager for logistics and geocoding.
00:17So today we're going to cover logistics and where Esri is headed and what we're doing with logistics.
00:26It'll be a fairly informal session. If you have any questions or comments along the way, please raise your hand.
00:33We'll be happy to take those.
00:35I don't know if it's a good idea to dim the lights.
00:38When we scheduled the meeting, we asked for the meeting right after lunch 'cause we knew everyone would be very awake.
00:45[Audience comment] Energized.
00:46Exactly. Energized. Exactly. But we'll do our best to keep it interesting for you, and from there…
00:57We're going to start off just by a quick show of hands, who is familiar with ArcLogistics? Very good.
01:06But we have some new people as well, so what we'll do is we'll start with a little baseline on what ArcLogistics is.
01:15And it's really simple. It's an unusual product, historically, for Esri 'cause it is an end user solution product.
01:23And it's really targeted at helping people that are operating fleets get their vehicles or their people…
01:32…or the goods on those vehicles to where they need to be, the right place, when they need to be there, the right time…
01:40…for the least amount of cost. So it is a solution that helps you save costs in operating your fleet.
01:48And it's about taking a large group of stops and assigning…and a tool for assigning that to a group of vehicles…
01:57…a pool of vehicles, setting the optimized stop order to scheduling the driving directions.
02:04Historically for Esri, ArcLogistics has been offered as a desktop solution, a stand-alone desktop solution.
02:12And those of you that have been around for a while might remember ArcLogistics Route was the initial product name…
02:18…and when we launched the new desktop version in 9.3, the updated one, we shortened the name to ArcLogistics.
02:26The current implementation is ArcLogistics 10…
02:28…and the desktop implementation of ArcLogistics has been out for around 10 years.
02:34About a year ago, we launched the new online implementation, the web-based version…
02:39…which used Esri-hosted services in a lightweight rich client that sits on the user's desktop.
02:50So what problems are we solving? And it's fairly fundamental. Look at the pictures on the screen.
02:57Those are route planners, dispatchers, managers that have to figure out what stops go to which vehicle and how to route them.
03:06Traditionally in most organizations, it's a very labor-intensive process.
03:13The results you get are probably less than efficient, and generally it leads to some frustration in the field as well…
03:23…and it's hard on the bottom line of your organization because your routes end up costing you a fair amount of money.
03:31There are automated solutions out there.
03:33Most of the ones that exist today, they're difficult to use and fairly expensive to implement.
03:41So why does an organization want to implement a logistics planning solution?
03:46The top bullet is the most, the clearest story. To have a significant reduction in your fleet-related expenses.
03:55If you're efficient about your route planning, you're going to drive less miles, you're going to use fewer vehicles.
04:03So less fuel expense, less personnel expense, less maintenance expense, capital expense on vehicles.
04:11Additionally, you will dramatically reduce the effort you put into route planning, as we showed on the previous slide.
04:18You'll be more productive. You can do more with less.
04:22You can put more work on your staff and assign more work in a day to your vehicles.
04:28If you're concerned about the environment, you're concerned about your carbon footprint…
04:32…the less you drive, the less carbon emissions you have as well.
04:36Many users use ArcLogistics as a modeling tool.
04:40If I need to add or expand my fleet, if I have fewer vehicles, have to change the operating hours of my operation…
04:48…during the course of the day, how is that going to affect how much work you can get done?
04:54You can improve customer service. One of our routing constraints is time windows.
04:58If you can accurately forecast to your customers when you will be there; I will be there between 10 in the morning and 12 noon.
05:05If you can use it to tighten your time windows, give them shorter time windows, enhance your customer service.
05:11With that, with enhanced customer service, comes an improvement of the reputation of your company in the business world as well.
05:22That's the story of ArcLogistics. What we're going to do today is we're going to change the story on you a little…
05:27…and our logistics strategy at Esri is going to transition more from one targeted at small fleets to more of an enterprise strategy.
05:40And it's…what we want to do that, why we're doing that, we want to take the benefits of doing efficient logistics…
05:50…and route planning and route optimization and bring that to a larger audience…
05:55…in terms of enterprises and in terms of implementing it internationally as well.
06:04So why did we do that? With that being said, why did we do that?
06:08As many of the distributors in the office will - excuse me, in the audience - our international distributors will attest to…
06:15…we have had a very clear demand to be able to better support enterprise logistics both here and in the international community.
06:26Additionally, we have significant demand internationally to be able to launch…
06:32…web-based logistics services targeted at smaller fleets as well.
06:38So, to meet that demand, our logistics strategy has evolved, and with the rollout of ArcGIS 10.1 early next year…
06:53…we're going to have some new products and some new technology in place to support that.
06:58So what we're going to do today is talk about the new strategy and also show, give you a preview of what's coming in the new strategy.
07:07So our agenda, I'll give you a quick summary of the logistics strategy, but you basically have it.
07:13Jeff's going to go through some detail on using the ArcGIS platform for logistics.
07:21We're going to show you some of the deployment options, talk a little about the partner and distributor support.
07:29Jeff's going to do some really neat demos I think you'll find very interesting.
07:33We'll talk about target markets for logistics and then, at the end, open things up…
07:37…for addressing any questions that don't come up during the course of the presentation.
07:46Our logistics strategy, very straightforward.
07:49Support logistics business needs and support that in a broader range and larger size businesses.
07:59You're familiar with logistics applications such as ArcLogistics, the ArcLogistics Navigator.
08:07We will continue with those applications. We'll be rolling out some additional applications that Jeff is going to show you…
08:13…and we're going to be offering these as template applications.
08:17So templates that partners, customers, and distributors can take and build on…
08:22…and tailor to their specific markets and their specific operations.
08:26There'll be a variety of deployment options, both on premise[s] and some service-based options.
08:33We are expanding our support for map data globally with additional coverages from commercial map data vendors.
08:41You heard some of the announcements of the new geographies with NAVTEQ that Jack made on the plenary stage yesterday.
08:50And we'll also be enhancing custom data support.
08:54So users, distributors that want to integrate their own data into applications, whether they're routing or navigation applications…
09:01…will have better support for that.
09:04And then the whole new toolsets will be available and supported for the Partner Network and for our distributors as well.
09:11So I've got the easy part. I got to lay out the strategy.
09:16I'm going to turn it over to Jeff, and he's actually going to show it to you and explain it to you in detail.
09:21Okay. The next slide, Rich. Alright. Can everybody hear me all right? Great.
09:29So one of the great things about where we've been going with ArcGIS…
09:35…is that ArcGIS itself supports a real strong logistics platform with the 10.1 release.
09:42So I just wanted to point out.
09:46We had capabilities with ArcGIS 10, and ArcLogistics and ArcLogistics Navigator were built on ArcGIS 10.
09:53We had geocoding services and routing services and map services with ArcGIS 10.
10:00Of course we had the ArcGIS [for] Server Network Analyst…
10:03…and we had data for the US that we were using to power the ArcLogistics Online application.
10:10As we moved out and as we focused our work on ArcGIS 10.1 [for] Server, and the Network Analyst team…
10:18…and the geocoding team and the [ArcGIS for] Server team have put a lot of effort…
10:22…into really supporting an enterprise workflow for logistics.
10:28No longer with ArcGIS 10.1 do we just have an ArcLogistics client and an ArcLogistics Navigator client.
10:34What we're also looking at supporting logistics workflows in web browsers through HTML5…
10:40…so that means that we can work on mobile phones; not just desktop web browsers, but mobile phones.
10:45We've also been working on an iPhone client that can be used as a front end for logistics work…
10:50…and it can be used by mobile fleets operators out in the field.
10:56We've also been working on an Android client so that users of Android devices can do mobile fieldwork…
11:02…out in the field and communicate and connect with the logistics system back in the office.
11:07And all this work, all these clients are powered by a much stronger set of web services at ArcGIS 10.1.
11:16We now have REST-ful services for VRP, for traffic, for service areas, for weather, for features…
11:24…and we have the capability of using a feature service to do tracking.
11:28So we've rounded out the capabilities of the [Arc]Logistics platform by extending these features with the REST API.
11:36So this really allows us to push these features out into the field and make them accessible to clients that we build for our mobile work force.
11:45And one other interesting capability, and you may have seen this.
11:49Euan Cameron did an excellent demo where he popped in a little memory stick into a mobile computer…
11:58…and he was able to run a lightweight application right off that mobile computer.
12:04And this is the ArcGIS Runtime. So this means we now have the capability that we had with ArcGIS…
12:10…in a very light portable way that we can move out into mobile devices in the field.
12:15So we've got all of these capabilities now…
12:18…or a good portion of these capabilities can be pushed out onto a mobile device using the ArcGIS Runtime.
12:24And then we've got some other important areas that we're working in, in the data side.
12:28So we've got…we've always had a request for user networks to be used inside the system…
12:33…so one of the biggest requests for the ArcLogistics Online system was…
12:37…"This system's great, but I'd like to use my own data in that system."
12:40With ArcGIS 10.1, we're going to support that so you'll be able to configure these clients…
12:46…these mobile clients to work with your own data.
12:48And in addition, if you don't have a data source, but you want to expand and you want to work in other geographies…
12:54…we've got a whole host of global networks and locators.
12:58So the network analysis team has been working on hosting a service now which includes routing capabilities…
13:04…VRP capabilities, service area capabilities for over 40 countries.
13:08And we'll be expanding that throughout the release of ArcGIS 10.1, and that'll be available as web services…
13:14…and also as on-premise[s] data that you could license and use to power a logistics or an enterprise logistics solution.
13:22And we've also got efforts in the area of collecting authoritative community data.
13:28So there're areas of work that we're doing right now in POI and geocoding, and we'll be starting this in the future with networks…
13:36…is sourcing data from our partners, from our distributors around the world and integrating that data…
13:42…that best available data, into an authoritative network, into authoritative geocoding strategy…
13:48…so that when you use the web APIs that Esri has to offer and you build a logistics solution on top of them…
13:55…you have the best data and you have the best solution for that locale.
14:01So in terms of deployment options, when we talk about deploying an enterprise logistics solution…
14:07…there're really two ways that you can access the capabilities. One is through a series of web services.
14:14So Esri will be publishing network analysis web services and geocoding web services…
14:20…and you can develop and build clients that use these web services that are in the cloud.
14:25And right now, with ArcGIS 10.1 beta 1, most of these services will be available and they'll be things that you can subscribe…
14:33…to the beta program and you can use to develop logistics applications and to support logistics workflows.
14:40And then of course, we have on-premise[s] deployments.
14:42And this is really all about organizations that want to host their own logistics solution…
14:48…and you'll be able to do this through ArcGIS [10.1 for Server] or an ArcGIS [10.1 for Server] appliance…
14:55…that includes logistics data, networks, and geocoding locators.
15:00And you'll also be able to do this in a desktop and in a mobile way…
15:04…because we'll allow you to plug in your own data into the solution and reconfigure the clients so they work with your own data.
15:13So in terms of cloud services, what will we offer?
15:16We'll offer a set of mobile applications that can be…that work directly against Esri's cloud services.
15:25These applications include, but are not inclusive [sic] of, ArcLogistics, an iOS app, and an HTML5 app…
15:31…and we also mentioned an Android app which we're just starting development work on.
15:36The list of web services that are available - I talked about this briefly, but there are a host of network analysis services…
15:42…and this includes a routing service, a time-aware routing service; service area analysis; VRP service; O-D cost matrix service…
15:52…will be available as web services that you can consume from your mobile application.
15:57We'll also have a whole range of geocoding services, including POI geocoding services and global geocoding services…
16:02…which will scale out across many countries.
16:05You'll also be able to implement tracking as a capability of our web services, and we'll show you a demo of how we do this…
16:13…but we do this using our feature service APIs, our REST feature service APIs.
16:18So we have a mobile client that reads information about the location of the vehicle…
16:22…and it passes it in through a REST request to a feature server…
16:26…feature service, and then that feature service can be accessed by a range of clients inside the enterprise…
16:31…and they can understand the location of the vehicle at any moment in time.
16:36And we'll be hosting feature services in arcgis.com that can be used for tracking implementation.
16:43And of course, we have our traditional basemaps and imagery, and you can see how that's been expanding.
16:48So there was a lot of talk yesterday in the plenary about a whole host of additional services that'll be available.
16:54And we'll also be able to implement weather information, weather maps and content, through a REST API in the solution.
17:03In addition, we will support navigation.
17:07So some of you are familiar with ArcLogistics Navigator, which is an onboard navigation solution.
17:13The ArcLogistics…or the iOS and the HTML5 app also support various forms of off-board navigation.
17:21As well, the ArcLogistics Navigator supports off-board navigation as well.
17:28For those of you that don't know what the difference is between onboard and off-board...
17:31…onboard is where there's data on the mobile device and off-board is where you're connecting to a service…
17:36…to do the routing and to do the geocoding. And so we'll support both of those modes in our clients.
17:44And in addition, we'll be working on a navigation client that allows you to work against your own data locally…
17:50…and so I think that's an interesting area, and this will be based on the ArcGIS Runtime.
18:01In terms of on-premise[s] deployments, we're looking at ArcGIS [for] Server plus the Network Analyst capabilities…
18:08…geocoding locators, tracking, feature services that could be spun up against your own database.
18:14Of course, basemaps and imagery that can be…that Esri has the ability to deploy in your organization.
18:23So this includes StreetMap Premium data as well as our Data Appliance…
18:28…and of course, weather data could also be included for on-premise[s] use.
18:32There are additional logistics workflows that could be supported by Business Analyst in terms of strategic planning.
18:37So this would be, if you're a logistics organization or your organization was interested in figuring out where to locate its warehouse…
18:44…we could use Business Analyst and some of the features of Business Analyst to sort of profile the community…
18:50…and figure out where the best location is to put your warehouse or your new business.
18:55And so that's also a capability, logistics capability, that can be provided by Esri technology.
19:02Let's move on, Rich, thanks. Okay.
19:06In terms of partners and distributors, we'd like to think that we can better support, with ArcGIS 10.1 and our logistics strategy…
19:14…we can better support our distributors and partners to sell applications.
19:18They can either take our existing applications, which can be configured to use Esri services…
19:23…or either distributor- or partner-hosted services.
19:27We'll have standard localization model applicable to these clients…
19:31…so these clients will be localized in the standard Esri/ArcGIS localizable languages…
19:37…and we'll have kits available to localize these clients into additional languages.
19:43And we hope to make this all available by the time 10.1 releases.
19:46So there will be a localization kit and a package of technology that will be available and documentation that describes…
19:57…how you can work with ArcGIS for logistics or for the…with the logistics capabilities of ArcGIS by the time 10.1 releases.
20:09Rich is probably better to talk about the business model, but I'll just say briefly we're working on the business model right now.
20:16So if you're a partner or you're a distributor and you want to use the underlying technologies…
20:21…or you want to access the web services or you want to work with the clients and customize the clients…
20:26…to work on top of your own data and services, we're working on the appropriate business model.
20:30The business model that…just from a high level, the business model that we'd like to follow is that…
20:35…when you're licensing this technology or when Esri is licensing this technology…
20:39…we're doing it based on the number of vehicles in a fleet…
20:41…which matches well with the standard practices that are used in the logistics industry today.
20:51So this is just an international example of how this can be done.
20:56We've been working with our distributor in the Baltic republics; this is HNIT-BALTIC.
21:03And they have very…been working with us over the last six months to take ArcLogistics and make it work against their own services.
21:12And we did this as a prototype working with them, because we wanted to find out where all the pain points were…
21:16…and we wanted to make the process simple.
21:18So the point that we're at now is that we've been able to essentially take the ArcLogistics client…
21:25…redirect it to HNIT's web services, and ArcLogistics now works with their web services, with their maps, with their data.
21:32And this is the model that we want to go forward with so that if we have clients…
21:36…they can work against your data, against your services.
21:40The clients themselves, I'll also point out, are extensible, so each one of the clients has an API…
21:44…a plug-in API, so that you can add additional capabilities to it.
21:47So we consider this application now as a template that you could use to deploy your own solution.
21:55Okay. So what I'm going to do quickly is I just want to demonstrate some of the new capabilities for logistics with ArcGIS 10.1.
22:03So Rich is going to quickly switch over to my machine. Alright. Make sure the Internet's still working.
22:12So the first thing I want to show, and you may have seen a demo similar to this in the plenary yesterday…
22:16…this is an HTML5 client that can be used for doing routing on a remote device, so if you have a web browser out in a vehicle.
22:26And this client is connecting back to Esri's web services. This happens to be our global routing service.
22:35And it's also accessing our global geocoding service. So what I've done is I've geocoded Redlands, California.
22:42And the idea here is that I want to show you how that with ArcGIS 10.1 [for] Server…
22:48…we have the ability to route on dynamic traffic information.
22:51So this is a new capability that really improves the quality of routes.
22:56So I've added a destination for Redlands, California. I'm also going to add one for Pasadena, California.
23:09Okay. So I've added a destination for Pasadena.
23:13And you can see in the background here, it's a bit of an interesting map we've put together…
23:17…but you can see the richness and the quality of the traffic information that we have available in our online routing services.
23:25So I'm going to add this second destination.
23:27And then the next thing I'm going to do is just navigate.
23:36So this is reaching out to our routing service, and you can see that it generated a route.
23:43[Inaudible comment]
23:45Yeah, our Internet connection's very slow.
23:47And this route has actually been guided by the traffic for the time of the day.
23:56So very quickly you can see that it's following, obviously following the green traffic.
24:03And one of the challenges with doing time-of-day routing is that you can never actually predict at the time you give the demo…
24:09…what the traffic's going to look like, which is a bit of a challenge.
24:13So when I ran this demo this morning, the traffic actually followed the 210 freeway because there was traffic on the 10.
24:21And so now it's following the 10 freeway.
24:24So this is all done in a very lightweight HTML5 application that's running in Chrome browser on my desktop.
24:33This application could also run on a host of mobile devices…
24:36…so it could be redeployed on an iPhone or an iPad or an Android device.
24:44And it's reaching out to our Esri web services and using our real-time traffic information and our global street network…
24:51…in order to solve a very basic routing problem.
24:54And it also supports a geocoding capability, so if you've got workers or drivers out in the field that need to find a location…
25:00…and need to get there quickly and need to do it in the most efficient way, an application like this would support their workflow.
25:07Okay. So the second thing I want to show is something similar, but I'm going to do it on a different type of device.
25:30Okay. So this is an iPad, and what you're seeing right now is a logistics application that we've built that runs on an iPad.
25:40And the thing that I want to demonstrate is that we now have, inside of ArcGIS 10.1…
25:48…the capability to really model very accurately different types of attributes.
25:54And one of the things I want to show here is that we now have the capability to prefer a type of feature or to avoid a type of feature.
26:03So what I've done here is I've generated a route that goes between Laguna Beach in California…
26:09…and it ends up in Lake Elsinore, California.
26:14And this is a standard route. This is a route that would be generated by most routing services.
26:19So I'm going to switch over to the settings for this application, and what I want to do is I want to say…
26:24…I'm driving a truck, and I'm going to prefer truck routes.
26:28So then I'm going to go back and I'm going to regenerate this route, and what you're going to see…
26:33…is when the route gets regenerated, it took a completely different path.
26:37I'm now driving a truck; I don't want to drive over the mountain on the narrow mountain road, even though it's quicker.
26:41I have to adhere to the preferred truck routes.
26:45So very quickly you could see that this lightweight application could be used in a mobile vehicle…
26:50…and it supports the depth of the Esri routing solvers.
26:54And this application can be redirected toward your own routing data, so if you've published or hosted your own routing service…
27:04…and you have specific types of routing attributes that you want to be able to support from the mobile client…
27:09…we can now do it in an HTML5 client; we can do it in an iPhone or iPad, iOS client.
27:18And of course, you can see that all the traffic information's here; the map is very fast, very straightforward…
27:25…and we've got search capabilities so we can search for addresses using our geocoding services.
27:30If you have your own geocoding services, you can plug those in, in the background.
27:36Okay. So the next thing that I want to show…
27:38So we took a look at optimization with traffic, we took a look at also truck-preferred routes…
27:43…and how you could use those in a mobile client.
27:47So I think that truck-preferred route capability is really important for people who're doing long-haul trucking…
27:51…and doing deliveries with trucks. I think it's a great new capability of the system.
27:58So the other thing I want to show is I want to show our new global web services…
28:04…and I also want to show how we can do tracking with the system.
28:09So I'm just going to move over back to my laptop. Thanks, Rich, for pointing it out.
28:17Okay. So this is the ArcLogistics client, and this is a newer version of the client than what you'll see from a download online.
28:28And you'll notice that this ArcLogistics client has a tab called Tracking.
28:35And you'll also notice, if you're perceptive, that we're not working in the United States…
28:42…but we're currently working a project in Sweden.
28:46So we've imported and geocoded orders in Sweden using our global geocoding service.
28:52We've pulled those in from a spreadsheet, and now we're going to build routes.
28:56And it just so happens that we can now build routes in Sweden in addition to about 40 other countries.
29:03And I think it takes about 20 seconds to build these routes.
29:06This is reaching…this is taking all the route information, taking all the vehicle information…
29:10…it sent it off to our web services, and it built the routes and it returned all the optimized routes.
29:16So there's an additional thing I can do here for my tasks, and I can send those routes.
29:23So I'm actually going to send those routes out to my fleet.
29:27And if we go into our setup, we can actually see that we have something called Mobile Devices…
29:32…and we have some different mobile devices, and these are assigned to drivers out in the field.
29:38And then each driver, we would assign a mobile device ID to that driver, and then when we create work for that driver…
29:46…we can actually send the work to the driver out in the field.
29:49So I'm now going to send these routes, and these routes are going to go out to three different devices.
29:56So it's taking up all the route information, all the information about the orders.
30:00It's taking that information and it's going to submit it to a feature service and store it in an ArcGIS feature service out on the web.
30:08So it's using a REST API to write all the information about those orders to the feature service…
30:14…and that feature service now hosts that information, and mobile clients can reach into that feature service…
30:20…and get information that they need to use to perform their routes for the day.
30:25So it's definitely taking its time here; we may have some delay with the Internet.
30:31What I'm going to do, though, is I'm going to show you one of the clients that I've got here is the ArcLogistics Navigator.
30:37And the ArcLogistics Navigator, even though it's running on the same machine, is going to reach out to that same feature service…
30:43…and it's going to get the work for the day. I'm not sure why it's taking so long.
30:52Okay. So it's done. So it sent out the work to the feature service.
30:55So now I'm going to go into the menu; this'll happen automatically, but I'm going to…
31:00…every 30 seconds, but I'm going to force it to actually get its route.
31:04So it's going out to the feature service, and it says that the new route is now available for me. and I'm going to start that route.
31:14So you can see now that it's running in simulation mode, but it's actually navigating.
31:20So it's got a list of the work that came from ArcLogistics, it was pushed out to the feature service…
31:25…it read the information about the orders that it had to complete for the day, and we've got all the information about each order.
31:31That one was just the start depot, but you can see that we've got all the information about the order.
31:35We've got the address. We could add additional attributes if there were additional properties about that order…
31:40…that you wanted to have your driver have access to.
31:44And one of the great things about this is…I'm going to speed this up a little bit so that we're simulating a little bit quicker.
31:50It's actually speaking in English right now, but it's generating the driving directions in, I believe, in…
31:58…let's see our language. It's generating the driving directions, sorry, just in English. I've just got English set up.
32:05But we've got a host of other languages. We've got German and French and Spanish that are supported.
32:10[Background audio] Destination in .3 miles…
32:11So it's telling me right now my destination's in .3 miles, and when I arrive close to the destination…
32:18…it's going to change, and it's going to say, Would you like to service this order?
32:22So I'm going to service the order, and when I service that order, it's going to send some information back to the map.
32:29And what you can see on the map is here's my actual location.
32:33So it's sent my location, as I've been traveling along the route, back to the feature service…
32:37…and now I can see that as a dispatcher in the office…
32:41…and my organization can reach into that database and see the location of my vehicle as it works through the day.
32:48So let's just go back to the navigator, and we're going to service that order, and we're going to start the service.
32:55And that work is happening pretty quick, so we're going to finish the service.
32:59And you'll see automatically the navigator continues to take the driver on their way…
33:04…and you can see the status for that order has actually been updated with the information that says that that order's been completed.
33:11So we have a real complete logistics workflow here.
33:14We have geocoding of orders, we have routing of orders, we have communication with the vehicle…
33:21…where we send the orders the status…or the information about the orders that need to be completed to the day to the vehicle.
33:27We have tracking of that vehicle and its current location.
33:31We have navigation guidance for the driver out in the vehicle, and then we also have information for the dispatcher…
33:40…or for the organization about the current location of that vehicle and what the status is for each one of the orders that have been completed.
33:49And I think these are capabilities that we have been hearing are critical to large organizations implementing logistics workflows.
33:58Those workflows are now possible with our applications, with our template applications, and with our…
34:05…with our ArcGIS 10.1 system supporting logistics.
34:11So one other thing that I just wanted to show briefly, and I'll just do this briefly.
34:17We have the ability with an application like this to reach out to your server and add data dynamically from the server.
34:23So here's an example. We've just added a button where I can reach out to my server; I'm going to add some ArcGIS Online content.
34:30What it did was it took my user name and my password for the server from my preferences…
34:34…and it reached out and it said, What services are available?
34:37I can take that service, topographic map, I can add it.
34:40And once I've added it, that topographic map now shows up in the list of map layers that I have to work with.
34:46I can just switch over to the topographic map. That topographic map came from my own server from my own service…
34:51…and now it's the background map that I'm working with in the system.
34:55So the system itself can be configured very simply to add your own maps and add your own data to it.
35:02Okay. So that's it for the demos. Next slide.
35:11There we go. Great. Excellent. That's some very neat stuff. Thanks, Jeff.
35:16So now that you've seen what our…well, what our logistics platform's going to be able to do…
35:22…from what it's done in the past, I thought I'd take a couple of minutes and talk about some of the markets we're targeting.
35:28And these are also areas where we have historically had success with our logistics solutions.
35:36You see commercial up at the top of the list, and that may be an area where we've had probably less of a market over time…
35:46…because our solutions have been targeted at small- and medium-sized fleets…
35:50…and we've not been able to provide solutions toward many larger trucking, transit, transportation, and logistics companies…
36:02…with some exceptions such as FedEx who we worked with together to build a custom solution.
36:08But now we're talking about more of a commercial, off-the-shelf approach.
36:12So in commercial, the transportation market, retail, and insurance.
36:18In retail, you do see logistics solutions, including ArcLogistics, used a great deal for delivery of goods…
36:24…from centralized warehouses out to stores and out to shops, as well as home delivery of goods.
36:32Probably the single biggest sector historically for ArcLogistics in the retail area has been beverage distribution…
36:39…and delivery of beer, of all things, into restaurants and other distribution outlets.
36:46In insurance, you would use it for tracking and routing insurance agents who may be doing…
36:55…and insurance adjusters who may be handling claims, as well as people in insurance that are out doing sales.
37:03Our online product over the last year has opened up a couple of new markets…
37:08…probably the biggest in the US being home medical equipment.
37:12The population of the US is aging; home medical equipment is a growing industry that is frequently…
37:20…the patients are frequently funded…
37:22…by government insurance that has some very tight constraints on it in terms of margins for the providers.
37:29So for them to be more efficient in how they route and deliver puts more money on their bottom line.
37:37Utilities, we see logistics routing used frequently in utilities around inspections, around service of infrastructure…
37:48…and around turning off and turning on utilities.
37:52One thing we don't do with our logistics solutions is high-density routing.
37:58So if you're looking to do residential trash collection, where you have to stop at every house…
38:03…on every block on every street, our logistics solutions, we don't have a solver for that.
38:09We do have some business partners, one downstairs, RouteSmart does that kind of work.
38:14So if you're looking at high-density routing such as residential waste collection, reading meters, they may be somebody you want to talk to.
38:21And then, finally, historically the biggest single segment for ArcLogistics as a small-fleet solution has been local government…
38:30…at the county and local government level.
38:33Again, routing. Routing inspectors, routing service crews, doing paratransit applications, and a variety of use cases.
38:43So we're looking to expand those use cases out more into out into the enterprise area and out into the international markets.
38:54So a quick summary. Our strategy is evolving, and it's evolving very quickly.
39:00We've been putting this together over the last couple of months to be able to present here today.
39:08We will be launching the new logistics platform based on ArcGIS with 10.1, which you've heard a lot about 10.1 this week.
39:18Jeff showed you a lot of neat applications, and again, those will be template applications.
39:23So there will be things that you as developers, customers, partners could do with those applications…
39:30…in order to tailor toward your customer base.
39:33A variety of deployment options, whether it's on premise[s], whether it's using our hosted services, or a combination of the two.
39:42Again, and I've stressed this over and over, 'cause this is where the demand has come from…
39:47…support for our partner network, support for international deployment, and then also as I've said…
39:53…the strategy's come together over the last couple of months.
39:56I ask, we all ask for your patience. We're working on the business model, the implementation bundles…
40:01…and there'll be much more information coming on this in the fall. With that, I have a couple of concluding slides…
40:11…but before we go there, open it up to the audience for questions, inquiries, feedback. Yes, ma'am.
40:20[Audience question] What's the order of magnitude that would cause you to go from the…
40:27…sort of your original ArcLogistics product up to the enterprise version?
40:30That's a really good question. So ArcLogistics Online, as it exists today, a single routing problem will route for 50 vehicles.
40:39We do have users that have multiple subscriptions over different facilities.
40:43ArcLogistics Desktop is effective 250 to 500 vehicles in a routing problem.
40:52We have users routing as many as a thousand vehicles with a desktop implementation, but that's really pushing the…
41:03That's really pushing the outside of the envelope.
41:06And we have customers that may have a dozen licenses of ArcLogistics Desktop, routing a large quantity of vehicles.
41:15But as we go forward, an enterprise solution built on a server, built on services, is going to be much more suitable.
41:22So now, whether you have hundreds of vehicles, you may have special needs that you want to use a secure, server-type implementation…
41:29…or you have thousands of vehicles over a national enterprise.
41:33So one of the…sorry, Rich, just to interject quickly.
41:35Yes.
41:36One of the great capabilities of, or great features of ArcGIS 10.1 [for] Server is that it's a 64-bit server…
41:43…and it can allow you to use much more memory to solve a problem.
41:48So the problem size that we can solve goes up substantially with this new platform, and that…
41:55We may see that capability just exposed more generically in terms of what you can do through the online service.
41:59Jeff Wickstrom, who's one of the developers, is over there frowning when he hears a thousand vehicles.
42:01But really, for organizations that have really big fleets, what we find is that they have workflows…
42:07…they each have different workflows, so there're different places that they get data from…
42:12…there are different ways that they organize those routes and plan those routes, and their requirements are different.
42:19So the applicability of something like ArcLogistics Online doesn't work for these larger organizations…
42:27…once they get up to hundreds of vehicles in their fleet.
42:31A lot of smaller organizations that use ArcLogistics won't…they may have a predefined way of doing their routing…
42:38…but it generally can fit into the constraints of ArcLogistics Online.
42:42But a larger organization needs a more…more flexibility in terms of how they deploy a solution.
42:49That's good input.
42:51[Audience question] I work for a local government, and we're looking at deploying an AVL, automatic vehicle location solution.
43:02This, what you're talking about here, would that be…Could we do that kind of thing with the routing system?
43:11So we could…That's a very frequent question. There's a lot of customers that we have that are using existing AVL-type solutions.
43:19And there's a couple…there's a couple ways that people will take advantage of those.
43:24So there's organizations that have an existing AVL solution. Some of those AVL solutions are a black box…
43:30…and you can only use their website, and you can only go into their website to see where your vehicle locations are.
43:36Some of those organizations are a little more flexible, and they'll have a REST API, and you can make a call to the REST API…
43:42…and integrate the locations of those vehicles into your own application, which sits inside of your own environment.
43:49And with ArcLogistics, we can do that. So we have the capability to reach out to somebody else's service…
43:56…and pull information about the location of your vehicles and embed it into the system…
44:00…and show you where the location of those vehicles are and use that to make decisions.
44:05Now, ArcLogistics itself does not have a hardware box that goes in your vehicle and is sitting there on a…
44:11…every 10 seconds, every 20 seconds and sending out an information to a web service.
44:17Though we have discussed this and thought about how that can be done, our approach has been more about…
44:22…taking advantage of consumer-level type devices that are becoming more and more prevalent out there in the world today…
44:29…the iPhones, the Androids, and building a solution or a small application that can run on those devices…
44:35…and leverage their GPS, leverage their data connection…
44:38…and be able to use those devices to communicate information back into the system.
44:46If you're deploying ArcLogistics Desktop, we also…there's a…
44:51We do have business partners that have built plug-ins that will interface ArcLogistics Desktop with existing tracking systems.
44:59So you can actually…one of them integrates…we have a couple partners that have integrated with TomTom WORK.
45:06So you optimize your route plan using ArcLogistics, and then through the TomTom WORK web interface…
45:15…they can then automatically send your stops and the work out to the drivers using the TomTom device. Thank you. Yes?
45:24[Audience question] Can you persist your routes that you've [inaudible] and your people drive from day to day…
45:29…so you can do some historical analysis?
45:31Sure. So we do persist the routes with ArcLogistics Online, and we have capability to export the routes into an external database.
45:42So you could write a plug-in to do that every day, or you could just do it once a month…
45:47…and export those into an external database, and then you could run some additional analysis on it.
45:52ArcLogistics itself does not currently have any analysis tools for analyzing historic information.
46:02I think where we're seeing a lot of interest though is as people can actually track where somebody is going…
46:09…comparing the tracks of where the vehicles have been to the planned route starts to get interesting for us.
46:15So I think you'll start to see some tools or capabilities in the future that start to try and rectify the differences…
46:22…between what a planned route is, where a driver was told to actually go…
46:26…and what the track shows or the location that they actually followed.
46:30[Audience question] You mean route adherence?
46:31Yes. Route adherence, exactly. Yes, in the back.
46:35[Audience question] Can you explain a bit more about how this can be used for inspections?
46:39I work for a gas distribution [inaudible] that involve…
46:49…that take into account routes that have a high density…
46:51…you know, high residential density, have to do a weekly inspection of every premises on a street, for example.
46:57[Inaudible] So how is that going to be used [inaudible] for utility inspections?
47:06Sure. So the typical inspection scenario might be around, or is frequently around periodic inspections of facilities.
47:20It could be around your infrastructure facilities; it's used frequently in local government where they may be doing…
47:28…compliance inspections for safety, pollution control, that type of thing.
47:33And they use ArcLogistics in order to assign the stops; they may have certain type of inspectors…
47:40…that have to go to certain stops based on what they're qualified or certified to inspect.
47:45So it helps in the decision-making process by using specialties, of setting the right skill set to the right location that needs to be inspected.
47:54You may need specific type of equipment. Maybe it's a utility, it's an electric utility, and some inspections…
48:01…might be transformers or other pieces of equipment up on poles and you need a truck with a bucket on it.
48:09So if you want to ensure that, using specialties for vehicles that the right piece of equipment is assigned to the…
48:16…is assigned to the right service location, it's used for that as well.
48:22So you made a point about really high-density routing, so essentially every location along the street…
48:28…or you've got maybe thousands. Would these be thousands of stops for each inspector per day, or hundreds of…
48:38[Audience comment] [Inaudible] …in this case, think of a city with every main in a service line on a street…
48:48…in a whole, basically, a whole swath of the city that you're… Hence, the density. So I'm trying to understand…
48:55So this is more…you're looking at more sort of a planning strategy.
49:00"I know that I need to visit these 10,000 locations over a period of a year.
49:05How do I plan out that work over the year?"
49:08So ArcLogistics itself doesn't help with that sort of periodic problem or that sort of long-term…
49:15…like I've got a bunch of things I need to visit over a year.
49:19But I think our enterprise solution definitely does something like that, and, you know, we have capabilities for doing territory design…
49:28…and territory planning and trying to figure out how to take certain groups of things that need to be visited and put them into packages.
49:36So you could take a solution like Business Analyst, for example, and you could figure out how to place, you know…
49:42…the 10,000 stops you needed to make into small packages that were geographically coincident…
49:49…or geographically, you know, aggregated, and then you could assign each one of those packages to a different day in the year…
49:55…and you could bring that or each one of those packages in on a different day each year into ArcLogistics, and then you could…
50:01…then you could route the work for the day and distribute that work for the day to the inspectors who were going out to do that work.
50:09So I think that ArcLogistics on its own probably can't solve exactly the full workflow of that problem…
50:15…but I think if you combine something like ArcLogistics with Business Analyst or ArcLogistics with Territory Designer…
50:20…or one of our other solutions, you could definitely solve that problem.
50:26Good answer. Yes?
50:29[Audience question] [Inaudible] …enterprise or larger fleets and stuff…
50:37…are you considering security for organizations that might not want…
50:43…anybody else to tap in and see where their vehicles are at any given time?
50:49So you're talking about the online services. So all the services that we run are protected…
50:59…so they're all HTTPS; they're secure, they're secure connections.
51:05And we have many different, you know, technologies that we deploy on top of our stack to be sniffing for people trying to hack the system.
51:12All the ports are closed down and such. And I think that we…
51:20I understand where your concern is. We haven't, to date, identified anybody who's hacking in to the ArcLogistics system.
51:28One way that we could do this, though, is if you had your own feature service…
51:33…or your own feature service that was inside your organization, and you were interested…
51:37…in using that feature service instead of our online feature service because you had some security constraints…
51:45…you could definitely use your own feature service to do something similar.
51:49You could reconfigure the application to use your own feature service.
51:53But I just think that fundamentally, you know, Esri as an organization is committed to providing secure services…
52:00…and there are some organizations that have issue.
52:04So for example, we have organizations that have been interested in ArcLogistics, but they're in the health sciences area…
52:13…or they're working in the medical field, and they're not actually allowed to send medical information out over the Internet.
52:19And so this is one of the reasons why we're so interested in supporting this enterprise strategy…
52:23…because there are a lot of organizations that need to install ArcLogistics so that it's living inside their own IT infrastructure…
52:30…and they can apply their own security and make sure everything is locked down the way that they need it to be locked down.
52:35So Esri has a security strategy that we employ on top of our own cloud services.
52:42It's very similar. Maybe even goes a little bit further than what a lot of organizations would implement…
52:49…but there are certain instances where you may want to take advantage of the new enterprise strategy…
52:53…and host ArcLogistics in your own environment, just so that you can be on top of the security of your own data.
53:00[Audience question] So if you did host it within your own environment, would you have to develop all the infrastructure…
53:04…and the basemaps and all that other…
53:07No. So this is what we're getting at is with ArcGIS 10.1, if you wanted to host this inside your own infrastructure…
53:14…you will have all the components to do it. So we'll have an on-premise[s] solution for you…
53:19…whether it be a full appliance where we can ship you the appliance and everything's in that appliance in the box…
53:25…and you can plug it in and you can spin up the services and reconfigure your clients to connect to those services…
53:33…or you could, alternately get ArcGIS [for] Server, get StreetMap Premium…
53:38…and spin up those services on your own hardware and do it that way.
53:42But that'll be a capability of the system with 10.1.
53:45Question all the way in the back.
53:48[Audience question] When you generate your routes like you were saying, how did you control the parameters?
53:55Have to have some kind of limits on the vehicle and on the [inaudible] itself because…
54:01Absolutely. So I'll have to start it up again here, but we'll take a look at it quickly.
54:10Jeff'll show you what…that you can… The ArcLogistics client is very interactive.
54:16You can go in and set the capacities and the parameters for both your vehicles, your drivers and also your routes…
54:24…and then import that information to match those routing constraints. It'll take a second to start.
54:35So in the demo, we'd prepared all that information already, but one of the first things that you do before you start routing…
54:42…is you set up information about your fleet.
54:45So we set up things for the vehicles - how much volume the vehicle can hold, and we can have different units of volume.
54:52In this case, we have three vehicles that can carry a maximum capacity of 2,000 pounds and a hundred cubic feet of volume.
55:00I think those numbers are pretty slow…small, a hundred cubic feet, but…
55:05And then we can assign fuel economy and fixed costs.
55:09So if we have a fixed cost associated with that vehicle each day, insurance or something like that.
55:13I'm going to run into a problem here quickly.
55:15[Audience question] How did you refer to the word cubic?
55:17Oh, that would be a measurement of the inside of the vehicle, of the storage space of the vehicle.
55:22[Audience question] I'm not saying that. What I'm saying, how did you know what the package cubic inches is?
55:26Okay. So what we can do is on an order itself, we can have the actual volume of the package.
55:33So if you know ahead of time what the volume of the package is, then you can use that volume…
55:39So we're not doing a highly exhaustive mathematical calculation…
55:44…where we try to figure out the dimensions of every single package that goes in the back of the vehicle…
55:49…but what we are saying, if you know that a package is 2 cubic feet or 3 cubic feet or 4 cubic feet…
55:53…we'll factor that size of the package into what the vehicle itself actually holds.
55:59So I have an order property when I import my orders that actually says how many cubic feet that order is…
56:05…and then that will be factored into the…sorry…into the optimization once the orders are assigned to a vehicle.
56:11And you can simplify it as well. You can change the fields from weight and volume to pallets, boxes, cases, kegs.
56:20You know, whatever you're dealing with when you're making your deliveries.
56:25[Audience question] But what happens [inaudible]? That seems pretty difficult for a freight company to deal with.
56:32They're not going to know the measurement and [inaudible].
56:36But here's more to my question. What happens when I [inaudible]?
56:46What happens in your scenario if I can't fit it all [inaudible]?
56:49We actually provide a message that says that not all of the orders could be completed by the capacity of your current fleet.
56:57And so what we'll do is we'll leave off 4, 5, 6, 10 orders, and we'll say you either need to…
57:03…add another vehicle to your fleet for the day, so you might need to go out and get a rental vehicle…
57:07…or you'll have to move those orders onto another day and complete them on another day.
57:11[Inaudible audience comment]
57:12Okay. Excellent. Great. Yes?
57:15[Inaudible audience question]
57:27So we don't have to do it based on volume. What we could do is we could do it based on shelf space.
57:31So we could reconfigure the application so that your units weren't volume but your units were linear feet of shelf space…
57:38…and if you knew that, you know, you had 200 linear feet of product that you needed to ship each day…
57:45…we could calculate the capacity based on that other set of units. It doesn't have to be based on volume.
57:54Great. Other questions? Ian.
58:00[Audience comment] It's not really a question. It's more about feedback. The feedback so far has been really good…
58:04…but if you go back to the slides, the previous one to the end, about the types of fleets…
58:10Want to switch over. Yes, thank you.
58:13[Audience comment, continued] Ask for some feedback if those are the types of fleets people would like us to support…
58:17…or if there are any others that aren't on that list.
58:19It's a great question.
58:22[Audience comment, continued] So are these the kind of fleets that you want [inaudible] and developing [inaudible] about?
58:32[Inaudible audience comment]
58:34[Audience comment] You know, in local government, if you're talking about [inaudible].
58:38What I'm concerned about is the…several kinds of fleets. One would be the vehicles that go out and do snowplowing.
58:46Then they also go out and clear culverts for the streets and things like that.
58:51And they often [inaudible]…those same people are people who go out and do road repair.
58:56And for number three, it would be perhaps for health workers, social workers who use vehicles, their own cars, they're not using trucks.
59:05So they're out doing calls on homes.
59:09And we also have people that are in trucks like, again, our facilities group, you know, tradespeople that would be in vehicles.
59:20And then also we have a large library system, and they have thousands, I mean, millions of pieces of property…
59:27…that they have to transport every year through a fleet of trucks as well. If you meet all that in [inaudible]...
59:35…then you've got it [inaudible].
59:38Sure we do. And what we see frequently in local governments who are, again, probably historically the biggest segment for ArcLogistics…
59:45…is they'll put multiple implementations of ArcLogistics into place.
59:51With the online version that we launched in the US last year, almost every local government that has tried it…
59:57…has come back for additional subscriptions for other departments.
1:00:02But with, you know, with the new enterprise strategy, the advantage you'll have with that is it's a single implementation…
1:00:10…that you can centrally manage from an IT perspective, as opposed from putting different software installations in each office.
1:00:21[Audience comment] One follow-up question for you in a second, but are you…
1:00:25I thought I heard you saying that there's an alternative to that now…
1:00:29…that we could use your services, like Software as a Service, for everything.
1:00:34Yeah. Absolutely. So the way ArcLogistics Online exists today is you are basically using Software as a Service…
1:00:44…but it's really Software plus Service; the service is in the background, and we have a downloadable client.
1:00:52But going forward, the enterprise strategy will open those. There'll be additional services, and we'll open those services up…
1:01:00…to an additional customer base and offer the template applications for them to build their applications on.
1:01:06So one thing that might be interesting is a type of a hybrid scenario where you're just using Esri map services…
1:01:13…but you might have your own geocoding services and routing services and your own tracking server…
1:01:17…that's set up in your organization to protect your own, you know, critical information.
1:01:21But you may just be going out across the firewall to get the Esri maps because you like the fact that, you know…
1:01:27…they're available in many different locations and they're standard and they're constantly updated.
1:01:32So there's the ability to use all Esri web services; there's the ability to use all of your own web services…
1:01:39…and there's the ability to create a hybrid model where you're using some of your own services plus some of Esri's services.
1:01:45Great. Do we have a question here?
1:01:47[Audience question] I think it was hit, but it was kind of a follow-on question to Larry's.
1:01:51We're about to embark on a [inaudible] project for the library system that I'll be working on…
1:01:56…but we need to make sure that we're building resources that can be used by…
1:02:01…health and information for all the other departments who are going to want to follow on [inaudible].
1:02:06So I need to take into account the library and title it what they all are going to need to be able to do.
1:02:11So that was why I asked the question about enterprise version or, you know, what sort of orders of magnitude are involved.
1:02:19But then he brought up some other issues that are definitely…
1:02:22And we'll have him talk more with you about that. Yes, ma'am.
1:02:28[Audience question] I'm interested in hazardous material [inaudible] routing.
1:02:35So have you incorporated hazardous material routes in your logistics?
1:02:42We absolutely do. So we have hazmat restrictions that are available for our routing solution.
1:02:51And I was just going to see if I could bring it up here. Looks like it's frozen on me.
1:02:57Is it in that database?
1:02:59Yeah, it may not…oh, it's not in that database. So it's not…
1:03:01In the online product it's available, so if you go and download the online product…
1:03:05…you can pick from different types of hazmat restrictions.
1:03:08One of the great things that we have with the new 10.1 platform is that these restrictions can now be not hard restrictions…
1:03:16…but they can also be soft restrictions.
1:03:18So in the case of hazmat, you know, you probably don't want to violate a hazmat type of a scenario.
1:03:27The hazmat values are in there so when you route, they're built in.
1:03:32They're built into the online web services and they're built into the data that we ship to deploy in your own organization…
1:03:38…but you can definitely set them as a restriction and avoid, you know, hazmat…
1:03:42[Inaudible audience question]
1:03:45Yes. We have…so there's a wide range of restrictions that we have.
1:03:49Height restrictions, weight restrictions, length restrictions, truck-preferred routes, non-truck-preferred routes, local streets.
1:03:58I think the list, I couldn't cover it all in my head, but there's probably 60 or 70 different restrictions that are available…
1:04:04…on our networks that you can prevent access to certain types of features on the network…
1:04:09…for certain types of vehicles and for certain types of workflows.
1:04:12And they break down. Hazardous could be poisonous, flammable. Length restrictions are the total vehicle, kingpin to rear axle.
1:04:20There's a variety of things in there. Yes?
1:04:25[Inaudible audience question]
1:05:03Sure. So I think that I probably need to understand the real, like get into a little bit more of the details of what you're trying to achieve.
1:05:10But your point is that you're trying to merge in other information or other data and combine it with ArcLogistics results…
1:05:20…and generate a different type of an answer or a different type of a solution? Is that…
1:05:27[Inaudible audience comment]
1:05:28So with ArcLogistics for example, ArcLogistics…and I won't even talk about it in terms of ArcLogistics.
1:05:35I'll talk about it in terms of ArcGIS 10.1, ArcGIS 10.1 [for] Server, and our REST APIs.
1:05:43So with ArcGIS 10.1 [for] Server, you have the ability, for example, to take a network of Brazil…
1:05:48…and put that network into ArcGIS [for] Server, and publish it as a web service.
1:05:54And that web service can be VRP, which is the same solver that ArcLogistics uses.
1:06:00That web service can be a service area, it can be just a standard routing service.
1:06:04So we have a range of network services that can be published from that Brazilian network through ArcGIS [for] Server.
1:06:11And those are just standard, generic REST APIs that you can take advantage of and ask those APIs questions and get back answers.
1:06:21So you could build a solution or an application that delegated requests through the REST API…
1:06:26…to the ArcGIS [for] Server infrastructure and get back an answer.
1:06:31And then you could also write another request to another system or to another part of ArcGIS…
1:06:37…that answered some other type of problem, get that information back, combine those two parts or bits of information…
1:06:43…and then store them in a database or present them to the user.
1:06:46So I think that as we move forward with this sort of enterprise model of having all of these great solvers…
1:06:55…and capabilities available through ArcGIS [for] Server and Network Analyst…
1:07:00…you'll be able to combine these answers and produce the kind of answers that you're looking for…
1:07:04…that are not necessarily the exact answer that ArcLogistics Online is providing for you.
1:07:10[Inaudible audience question]
1:07:27Take it offline?
1:07:28Yeah, maybe we should just take this offline and discuss this once we're finished with the session.
1:07:33And then maybe I can better understand exactly what the problem is that you're trying to solve.
1:07:38[Audience question] Are you considering the solution for rail or air routes?
1:07:43Ah. So that's a good question.
1:07:46So as we move forward, we have a capability with ArcGIS 10.1 [for] Server and Network Analyst to do multimodal routing.
1:07:57And the key here is that we can start to bring together more types of…
1:08:04…modes of transportation into the base network that we're using to host our services.
1:08:10So there is some work that's being done on pedestrian, walking directions, for example.
1:08:17So a lot of times, someone will want to drive somewhere and then need to walk somewhere…
1:08:21…and then to go up the elevator into the building to get to the actual destination.
1:08:25So we have some data that's accessible to us on a…in a global context for pedestrian, for the pedestrian mode.
1:08:36And we also have a goal to start to bring in other types of transportation networks like buses and subways and other types…
1:08:44…of public transportation networks, and some of that data is available to us now through the commercial vendors that we work with.
1:08:51So we have a plan over the next year or two; it's not there now, but we have a plan to start bringing…
1:08:56…these other types of modes of transportation into the network.
1:09:00I think in a lot of respects we're reliant on the commercial data vendors at this point, but as we move forward…
1:09:06…and we support more and more sort of community sourcing, there's the capability that…
1:09:11…if somebody has a community type of a network that plugs into the base network…
1:09:16…that we could consider plugging that in and making it part of the standard network.
1:09:22But over time, we'll definitely add more types of transportation.
1:09:26There's been discussion about can we add flight routes for commercial airplanes, you know.
1:09:32We know that you can actually fly from New York to Paris, so we should say, okay, I can drive to the airport…
1:09:38…and then the next, you know, way to get there is to take this…
1:09:41[Audience comment] Seems like FedEx…I mean, I know FedEx is [inaudible]...
1:09:45Sure. It's absolutely possible with the system. The challenge for us is just pulling in the appropriate data…
1:09:52…and making that part of the system.
1:09:54I know one of the funniest things I ever saw with routing is there's a…I hate to say Google…
1:10:00…but there's a Google capability where if you want to get from New York to Europe…
1:10:05…it actually tells you to jump in the ocean and swim across the ocean in your driving directions for your route.
1:10:12I don't think that's quite where we want to go. I think we want to provide a real answer.
1:10:17And the dependency to provide the real answer is getting access to that real data…
1:10:21…and we're working on sourcing that data so we can extend out the modes.
1:10:25Esri will not tell you to go jump in the ocean.
1:10:29So we're about out of time. A couple quick housekeeping items.
1:10:34Contacts. You're welcome to stay around and talk to us. Contact information for Jeff and for me are both there.
1:10:43We also have some additional big brains from the team are in the room.
1:10:47Chaitanya, who does a lot of the mobile development. Raise your hand. Chaitanya's here.
1:10:52Jeff Wickstrom, who does a lot of work on ArcLogistics and Network Analyst, is here, and Matt Crowder…
1:10:59…who heads up the Network Analyst team, is here as well.
1:11:02So please take advantage of having the resources here.
1:11:06We're also set up on the Commercial Island. Most of everything that Jeff showed you, those capabilities…
1:11:11…are available for a more detailed demonstration downstairs on the Commercial Island.
1:11:17And then, there we go. Before I say thank you, this year we're doing something new for the session evaluations.
1:11:23They're available online at this URL if you'd like to fill those out; we encourage you to do so.
1:11:31We really appreciate your attention today and your interest in logistics.
1:11:35[Audience comment] Could you go back one slide to get [inaudible]...
1:11:38How's that? There you go. Very good. And this will be published in the proceedings. Thank you very much.
1:11:44Alright. Thank you.
